Queen Alexandra Horse shoe brooch? " In the images Dave has posted links for, I think that Queen Alexandra was photographed wearing two different brooches and two different crosses. To my eye both the brooches and the crosses look different. I don't have any idea what gemstones were in either of the brooches or crosses. What do others think?

" Here is a picture of Queen Alexandra wearing the same brooch and cross. I would suggest this is a black enamel brooch with a diamond border. Just for comparison here is Queen Margrethe in a similar brooch.

Didn’t Alexandra give necklaces from her own collection as wedding gifts to all her granddaughters? Maybe she did the same to her grandson’s wife? Some of these were given as mourning jewels and worn by various ladies; others may have represented a gift on the accession of a monarch etc. It is difficult to state definitely what was what without knowing about the period when the brooch was worn. I hope that someone knows what Queen Alexandra's brooch represents. Somehow I doubt that it was actually a mourning jewel. But!! Another photo from the same sitting. Below we can see Queen Alexandra wearing another brooch with the initial E and a crown. I suspect that it was given by her husband, Edward VII after he became King. In this instance we know that the photo date is circa 1906-7, so it was within the life time of Edward VII.

My estimate of his age would be around 4 years or so which would make it around 1907. The C might relate to Queen Alexandra's father Christian IX who had passed away in 1906. Queen Alexandra seems to be wearing mourning attire and her jewels also seem to reflect that. Notice the long string of jet? and a matching bracelet worn by her.

I have just seen this photo on the Royal Collection site. It gives a date range of 1900 to 1910. But note the arm band worn by Edward VII, indicating a gentleman in mourning.
