Lady Greville wearing a Kokoshnik tiara at - post by British royal jewels
Posted by Franck on September 6, 2021, 4:37 am
The Instagram site British royal jewels has posted a very significant photo of Lady Greville (Lord Charles Greville was the younger brother of Ronald Greville, husband of Margaret Greville) wearing a a kokoshnik tiara at the State opening of Parliament .
I was struck by the resemblance between the tiara worn by Lady Greville at the State Opening and the Emerald kokoshnik and the emerald necklace ? owned by her sister in law Margaret Greville.
What do you think ?
Very best regards,
Franck

The tiara looks like the emerald kokoshnik. Could it be loaned from her sister-in-law?

Very interesting Franck, their is a similarity in the jewels worn by Lady Charles Greville to the emerald and diamond tiara and necklace we have seen debuted by Princess Eugene and the necklace by her grandmother the Queen.
However the tiara if it is the same must have been tinkered with as the one seen here is larger than the one worn by Princess Eugene and the centre stone seems to also be differently shaped.
I am given to believe that the Greville's were very wealthy people so it is also possible that Lady Charles Greville may have had her own jewels via Lord Charles and did not have to bother her sister in law to borrow her jewels. Margaret Greville often changed up her jewels though,so it's either one or the other scenarios I would have mentioned above.

Dave.

When the Hon Charles Greville, Mrs Ronald Greville's brother-in-law, married in December 1909, his bride was the widow, Mrs Henry Kerr, nee Olive Grace from a prominent New York family. Her first husband, Henry Kerr, an American banker, was reputed to have left her and their two sons a considerable fortune. At the time of her marriage to the Hon Charles Greville, she resided at Carlton House Terrace, London, entertained lavishly and appeared to have all the trappings of a wealthy widow.
As a widow who moved in the upper echelons of society, I imagine that she would have had a number of jewels prior to marrying into the Greville family. Shortly after the wedding Lord Greville died and Charles inherited the title of Baron. Throughout their married life the couple entertained and travelled and Lady Greville's name was frequently mentioned in the press. Unfortunately, she, like her sister-in-law, Mrs Ronald Greville, rarely appears in press photographs.
The question posed by Franck is -- was Lady Greville wearing her sister-in-law's tiara.
I would say definitely not.
Unfortunately the photo in the press is of very poor quality, however, sufficient detail can be seen which leads me to conclude that Lady Greville was definitely not wearing the Greville emerald tiara.
Lady Greville's tiara
Although the photo is very blurry when enlarged, it can be seen that the pattern in the diamond section is different from the tiara now owned by QEII.
Other differences are
1. Lady Greville's tiara is much wider than the Boucheron emerald tiara of QEII.
2. The shape of the central stone is totally different.
3. Even if the central emerald element in the Boucheron tiara is removable, anything which takes its place needs to be the same size as the rest of the structure of the tiara remains the same.
The evidence which I have come across suggests to me that Lady Greville's parure contained sapphires.
Apart from the parure seen in the photo above there is evidence that she had 2 other diamond tiaras.
First I would like to point out again the different sizes of the central element. In the Boucheron tiara worn by Princess Eugenie it is obvious that the central element goes from the top of the jewel to the bottom. This is not so with the tiara worn by Lady Greville.
Secondly, the Boucheron tiara worn by Princess Eugenie is more graduated from the front to the back than the one worn by Lady Greville.
Thirdly, to my eye it looks as if the emerald side elements in the Bouchern tiara worn by Princess Eugenie are smaller than those in the one worn by Lady Greville.
I would stress again that the design of diamond section of both tiaras looks completely different.
There are not many photos available showing Lady Greville in grand jewels.
Sapphires
I suspect that the jewels worn by Lady Greville to the Opening of Parliament in 1930 may be the sapphire parure she wore to a Court Ball in 1935.

Emeralds
The only reference I found to emeralds was a description of a brooch in 1934.
Tiaras
Apart from the one worn to the Opening of Parliament in 1930, Lady Greville was photographed wearing 2 other tiaras.
This one, worn to the Opening of Parliament in 1924, may be the one referred to in the description above as a "flat diamond bandeau"
Lady Greville was also photographed with this tiara in 1933.
Brooches
1. A diamond bow.
Lady Greville was reported to have worn a large diamond bow to a charity function in 1931.
Perhaps it is the one seen in the photo above.
2. Brooch worn in 1916.
3. Pearl brooch 1952
4. Unknown. Perhaps it might be the square shaped emerald described earlier, although the dark gemstone in the pendant of this brooch does not look square to my eyes.
Pearls
It seems to me that Lady Greville had several pearl necklaces, as well as bracelets and earrings which can be seen in the various photos.
In contrast to her sister-in-law's pearls, the press does not seem to have lauded them.
Another necklace
Unknown jewels
I have no idea what gemstones are in this set of earrings and necklace.
Nor do I know what gemstones are in the jewels seen below, which Lady Greville wore to the Empire Ball where, as one of the hostesses, she greeted Princess Marina.
Thanks Beth, impressive research once again. The believed sapphire parure is extraordinary. Something is niggling at me that maybe Lady Charles Greville may or could have borrowed some of her reported jewels possibly from her sister in law Margaret.
From what I have seen, the jewels do kind of have Margaret Greville's kind of sedate but yet grand style. I can't get over how similar the necklace is to the one seen on HM and the Tiaras although different still do have resemblance to each other. The brooches and pearls also resonate with the ones seen on the late QEQM which came via the said Margaret Greville.
These mysteries are the ones which really spice things up and make people ask serious questions and get them doing some required research. I wonder what was the relationship like between the sisters in laws.

Dave.
