D1 Power 5"
362,038 Girls in the United States played High School Softball in 2018-19 school year, the last available year stats. Of those only 20,419 advanced to play @ the collegiate level. So for those parents looking for the ROI on their travel softball that’s 5.6% and only 1.8% went to a D1 school. That does NOT mean they went to a P5 either. By comparison Ice Hockey for High School Girls going on to play @ the collegiate level was 26.2% and 8.9% respectively. So if you are looking for a ROI then you’ll get a much better yield from hockey than any other girls sport. But hurry before the NCAA changes the rules so the boys can compete evenly. Oh and you can kiss that ROI goodbye when your little girl decides to get married just a heads up. Let’s be honest children are not a good investment overall and daughters cost more. For a father will inevitably and without realizing it teach their daughter from a very early age to treat them like an ATM. We can’t help it. At this point I’ve become suspect every time she hugs me because she can reach my wallet now. But IF she continues to love the game, IF she continues to develop and IF she gets SOME scholarship money from softball then I am waaaay ahead of the game IMHO. For I surely would rather she learn from the experience of teamwork, achieving a goal, and how to fail while she is still young enough to accept those life lessons. I would recommend keeping her grades up before anything because few if any softball student athletes will get a 100% scholarship offer to play D1 and or P5 and her brains will carry her farther post collegiate sports than her cleats will.
