To AD, or not ..

My daughter is going to the portal today. The head coach is the issue, but all the assistants are bailing, along with a lot of the team's talent. My kid wants to take a different degree path than the one she chose for this school. Had solid playing time and reasonable stats.

Here's my question. Do you go to the AD and give the real reason and what you've seen, or will that hurt her in future "recruiting" as she'll be seen as a "trouble maker"? Will the exodus of the assistants be seen as a red flag to the administration? She has no problem being honest with the head coach, but is it really her job to be the moral compass for the administration? Here's one of the few times I really want to hear your opinions. In the end, the kid will do what she feels is correct.

Kudos to the "maybe 2" ADs who are doing their job.

It seems like colleges are finding plenty of money to pay athletes now. They should quickly figure out how to make your athletic department profitable.

Why are you (or your daughter) trying to solve the problems of the school she is leaving? Not her job. Get in the portal and hopefully she will find a new home.

The broader perspective should be the red flag to the administration. If it's not, they have even bigger problems than your daughter is going to bring to light.

If they ask, I would advise her to give a politically correct answer. I've changed my major and believe a new start in a different program will benefit me overall. I appreciate the time and wish you the best yadda ... yadda ... yadda. She has nothing to gain with, as you put it, "being honest."

My two cents...

Unless it's some type of Paterno / Sandusky problem, where you wouldn't be able to live with yourself if you didn't sound the alarm, you close your mouth, pick up your chin and move on.

Stakes are too high, and time is too precious to do anything that could jeopardize opportunities going forward.

Good point. I have to amend my comment above to include that, yes, in any type of abusive situation, one has responsibility to speak up.

Case in point, my daughter was looking at a program and allegations of abuse came out. I actually reached out to the student and parent after explaining our situation. They were very open and honest and we ultimately changed direction. That specific coach quit the following year. I was very appreciative of the young lady speaking out. She stated she did not want any kid out of high school to endure what she had been through.

I think the question is, will it affect her going forward? I think the answer is maybe. If you have a coach who's even slightly self-aware of their own bad behavior, then yes. They won't want to put themselves in harm's way. For most programs, they'll simply look at the kid's potential and academics.

I think the programs that would have a problem with this are the ones you want to take a hard pass on. Just saying.
