Catfished

We learned the lesson the hard way. If at all possible, when you're choosing a school, don't hesitate to have open discussions with existing players and ask the hard questions. Daughters at a state school, and the coach is bat shit crazy. Seemed very caring during recruiting, but is 180 degrees different once they're on campus. Red flags were all the Ass't Coaches left, and once my daughter spoke with the players, they let her know it only gets worse.

I know everyone's going to call the kid soft, and she's only getting coached up, but this is professional-level head games. Not worth it, thank God for the portal.

Sorry for her misfortune.

I've seen it happen to too many kids.

I didn't meet her head coach until after my kid signed. I had met the assistant during scouting but it was brief and impossible to make any judgement. Went and met the head coach soon after. Rolled out the red carpet and was very genuine. Totally agreed with her decision to play for that coach. Prayed the coaches would stay on another 4 years, even asking that in person.

Love it when it works out for the player, still feel like her love of the sport is still there, and there's hope for a better situation.

In hindsight, the Assistant, who was the main reason she signed, knew that she was leaving, but I'm not sure what she could have done inside the confines of her job. Regrettable situation for everyone except the Head Coach who isn't held accountable.

This is a good lesson for everyone.

You really need to do your homework, and even then the decision is going to be a leap of faith. Unfortunately, players with eligibility remaining rarely want to do anything that could further jeopardize their playing time or ability to find a new home. Unfortunate reality, but I certainly understand.

Looking at assistant tenure is a good barometer, as is portal activity, coach contract status, and win/loss record (inference of stability).

I bet I know the school. I actually doubted some of the stuff my daughter said until I spoke with other parents. Felt horrible about it.
