Danya collapsed numbly, her nerves registering explosions of pain. She gritted her teeth, bearing the agony. She called out for Maverick, for Remus, for Oracle, Chickadee, and Kelsea. She dragged herself the last few feet inside the den-she'd been approaching it, her stomach swollen with pups, larger than when she was pregnant with her first five, when the contractions hit-and she waited out the pain.
fade in, fade out
Maverick would be here by now, perhaps her children. She looked up at him with a breathless smile. What should we name them? There were so many-seven pups, which, she was pretty sure, was over the normal limit she'd seen wolves carry. How strange. . . .
Danya mused, I suppose we could name this little boy Nephilim-I like that name for him. His scales are so like mine. And I think this girl should be Derevko. The little girl, unlike her yellow-scaled brother, had scales to match Daneliya's. The rest of the children had no mutation.
Her blood chilled when she laid eyes on another son: an Ethiopian pup. There was no way in h e l l that this child was Maverick's; this had to be a double litter. The boy was an Ethiopian wolf.
She licked an unmoving girl gently. The child had no pulse. Daneliya singled out another small child, a female, just slumped against two of her siblings. Her chest was rising weakly. Daneliya looked at Maverick with sorrow. She's not going to make it. She moved the pup over, as gently as she ever could.
