Willow’s eyes were stinging with tears, but she managed to calm down as Redd consoled her, breathing through the panic. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “It’s just that I’m so afraid of being left again. . . . My brother was killed in the war, because I couldn’t save him. Several of my siblings fought and killed our allies in the war, and my mother died when I was newborn. I don’t have anyone.” She looked at the ground.
She was grateful for Redd’s comfort, and the fact that he seemed to so easily decide to do so. She let him twine his tail around her, grateful for the small support. She barely noticed that the tie had disappeared.
If they were to pursue this soulmate tie, she had no idea of what was to come. Redd and Willow were, it seemed, perfectly matched. She knew that soulmates were usually perfect matches; she hoped that this was the case.
