are the two obvious near term solutions at least. People are living longer and fewer children being born. Any changes would have to be grandfathered and incremental, of course, but raising the cap is the obvious most effective solution, which they have been doing... just not enough. We used to have a windfall for the last few months of the year after reaching the cap, but it wouldn't have hurt us to pay those last few months. Too many people depend on SS and Medicare. It can't just be scrapped. We could survive without it if it came down to that, but we are not most people. Too many people live hand to mouth and would not or could not save on a regular basis.
