As someone said to me, when someone mentions conspiracy theories it usually means incompetence rather than conspiracy.
I have no problem with the spin-offs as they are a way to keep current listeners staying with the brand. As for radio, originality is the key and the main brands are using their main channels now to advertise their over offerings not just other audio options. These spin offs are not radio, they're just specialised podcast rather than a real radio station.
Once when I was teaching 13 year olds about representative sampling I read a letter, from someone who wrote to the local paper each week, complaining about something on the local council estate he lived on as well as most of the students. I asked them if his opinion was representative of everyone on the estate. The student who put his hand up first said "No he just likes a good moan".
The idea that a few people's posts on Twitter are in any way representative of the general public is nonsensical yet many media outlets decide that this represents "outrage".
If you read through the piece there are different views reflecting mine at the end which isn't always the case when you read similar headlines.
It doesn't cost the BBC much money to use their own archive. There were some excellent documentaries on Buddy Holly on BBC4 last night followed by rock n roll performances by him Dion, Jerry Lee Lewis and others.
