My mother's decline was more rapid than my father's when it came, but it still took time. Little by little, they were robbed of life. And that is the tragic story of so many I have witnessed decline and die.
And yet, the up side to longer life and better healthcare is that many are now living not only to see their grandchildren attain adulthood, but to see their great-grandchildren as well. (I only knew one grandparent - such is the case for many of my generation).
As always, one takes the good with the bad.
But I have often wondered - if there is a loving supreme being, what is the point of a slow decline that often brings suffering? How better it would be for all of us if when our time comes, to go to bed one night and quietly drift off to sleep and away.
