“So live, that when thy summons comes to join
The innumerable caravan, that moves
To that mysterious realm, where each shall take
His chamber in the silent halls of death,
Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night,
Scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed
By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave,
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.”
While this is not addressing those who are left behind, it does address what the dying can have done for those who are left behind. Not our circumstances nor our problems define us, but rather how we address them is what matters. A well-lived life
goes a long way in comforting those who remain, and serves as a good model for approaching the inevitable. Preparing to die physically is actually a life-long pursuit, best not neglected.
It is a sweet thing to be greatly missed and loved.
