During the aughts there was a group of 9 seniors -- my parents, three other neighborhood couples and the widower next door to my parents -- who made it a several-years-long tradition to meet Saturday mornings at this restaurant or that for breakfast. I got the impression that it was fairly rare for all 9 to make it on a given Saturday, but perhaps 5, 6 or 7 of them.
Now there's but a single couple among them that could make the fellowship breakfast -- if it were still being held. Mom has since moved away from the old neighborhood to an assisted living home 30+ miles away. The other 6 members of the breakfast club had the final breakfast of their lives years ago.
Soon the old neighborhood will bear no clue that any of them ever called the place home.
