One never knows what life will bring, and we do take the good with the bad. We all hope to live a full life and enjoy our kids and grandkids, but not to become a burden to them or go through a long slow decline of suffering and death. But it’s like Shakespeare so aptly alluded to… conscience doth make cowards of us all.
It’s so easy to look at someone else in decline (while relatively still healthy oneself) and say, I don’t ever want to live like that… but quite another to come to that point yourself. The natural instinct to live can be quite strong.
We try to give him as many good moments as we can, and reassure him that we are here for him and that it’s not so much a burden, but we know it bothers him, as it would us if/when we came to that stage in our life. He will be 94 this year, and yes, he has always had an amazing constitution, and, he still often has a quick wit… when he is awake!
