You have probably noticed that I am a big fan of free markets and the diffusion of power in government. If there is one thing that the COVID/lockdowns taught us, it was the danger of the politicians declaring an emergency in order to invoke almost limitless power to restrict our freedom.
I frankly don’t see that much difference with Trump declaring an emergency to force tariffs upon an otherwise free market. Sure, it makes some sense to equalize tariffs between countries, but trade deficits aren’t a bad thing. Most trade deficits actually benefit American consumers and businesses.
Yes, Congress abdicated their authority on tariffs in 1934. All that did is concentrate decision-making power. Bad idea in my opinion.
Bottom line is I trust free people making free and voluntary decisions about the value of goods and services more than I do politicians who think THEY know what is best for us.
