I agree with your view.
However, this tariff topic, while fascinating, is a bit obscure to me. For example...during the Bernie Bro days...there was a great hupla for corporations paying their "fair share." Don't tariffs force the corporation to pay ALL the freight in importing the goods they wish to market in the USA? One would think that the democrats would be delighted with increased tariffs. And yes, I realize that the increased cost is passed onto consumers - but with the exception of food and medicine - it is amazing what people can do away with that currently is felt to be a necessity. I would think that during COVID, Americans learned that lesson as well. If one stopped purchasing goods...would that not force corporations to suck up some of the pain and lower costs in order to be able to sell? Then there is the assertion of "across the board" rather than 10% on "certain goods"...with the gentleman's agreement that levels remain even under the umbrella of the WTO. I would think that whatever HAS to currently be imported that directly impact life sustaining materials for Americans would only be tarrifed at the lower rate??? I am probably missing several steps??? Yes??? As capitalism is based on a "free market" premise...I'm all about the free market. During COVID, Americans (and probably other countries as well) were baptized by fire with an upfront illustration of how critical the supply chain is - and what happens when it is disrupted. Somewhere lost in all of this - the idea that America would become more self-sufficient and bring back certain industry within its own borders is lost (hence, the campaign story about the furniture maker in North Carolina). Weren't tariffs supposed to be primarily about encouraging large corporations to move their businesses back within the border? Having a free market within our own borders doesn't sound like a bad thing to me. Let's start with medicine...let's make it here again.
