There was no sonic boom because they couldn't break the sound barrier until out of controlled airspace (read out to sea in their case), either out of NYC or DC. One could not have passenger aircraft occupying the same control zone flying at anything but like speed.
I was around, too, and watched the whole grand affair with great interest.
No-one was listening to such Village Voice twaddle back then who was in operational control of that service or commercial aviation in general. They had no effect one way or the other except to whine piteously to no-one listening. You are giving that crowd far too much credit.
