Frog and Monogram didn't do it, thankfully.
These old Hawk kits I'm building had proud rivets at first; their later stuff they settled down, as did Airfix. They annoyed me much like the great gaping panel lines you mention. The other things were convex panel lines rather than concave; easier to cut in the facet of the mould but backwards.
Now, I'm not really worried about it anymore because I'm building them for the nostalgia for the kits themselves and the fun of the build rather than as miniatures. Building models and my cats were the things that kept me sane during my childhood, which is probably why they both are still such important parts of my life, perhaps too important according to those who would psychoanalyse me today.
