My opinion, they exaggerate the panel lines to ease the task of inking them for contrast by less-skilled modelers. I can think of no other reason they'd do this, especially if they're scale-model chest beaters. I've seen examples at IPMS and other national shows, and it looks terrible/silly. I've never seen an actual airplane with what looks like soot escaping the joints between panels.
