Your Aldi clientele and mine must be different. There's little threat here that the carts are stolen. According to the manager, the deposit regimen is deployed to entice folks to return the cart to the front of the store, not put them in repositories located around the parking lot where a staff-member has to go out there every hour and gather them up. He freely admits they don't want to pay someone to do that. They've also recently gone to self-serve checkout in the name of saving a few bucks (and potentially speeding up the process). There might be one or two full-serve checkout lines, but otherwise, you're on your own. Bring your own bags, okay fine. Eat organic, okay fine. They are just not my "cup of tea".
The market we usually got to (Shoppers) has two young bucks assigned to storefront upkeep. They return the carts to the front of the store (after cleaning them out for things like sales flyers, grocery lists, and other stuff left behind by users). They also tidy up the front of the store, handle the propane refills as needed, empty the trash recepticles, etc. If you pull your car up to the front, they will even offer to help put your stuff in your car (likely expecting a small gratuity, lol). All very 1950-1960-ish. I'm good with it...having my choice of five hundred breakfast cereals is just icing on the cake.
Now the Weis store across the road...don't get me started on those bastards.
