Obviously Paramount wants the merger deal to go through and that means not aggravating trump more than necessary. That is why they paid off his lawsuit. They were still sticking behind Colbert until he went after them publicly and made things extra sticky for them and their merger. Then they decided that they had to do something and they did.
It is quite concerning that trump is wielding this kind of power over free speech by forcing his will in areas of free speech that are normally treated by a POTUS as a personal annoyance that comes with the territory.
