First and foremost, I've been watching the second season of "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End." It's a fantasy animated series from Madhouse Studio in Japan...with a difference. The story starts (in the first season) after the big, literally world-saving quest is over. It's anything but the usual combat-fest battle shounen anime, with a deliberate pace, exquisitely subtle writing that focuses on nuanced and insightful character development, absolutely gorgeous art direction, and careful, subtle animations. Well...until they actually are fighting...it's not an action series, but the moments of action are insanely well animated and directed.

A big focus is on how different characters perceive time, the inevitable result of main protagonist Frieren not just being an elf (and thus incredibly long-lived with a very different sense of the passage of time), but also not being the most socially adept person around. It's very much an adult story, but not because of any particularly dark themes (quite the opposite, really) or gratuitous fanservice, but because it's completely grown up writing.

I can't recommend this enough. For me, the best fantasy series (or movie) in a long, long time, in any medium. Legit masterpiece (a term I don't throw around loosely). I watch the subtitled version (and I can understand much of the Japanese anyway), so I can't comment on the quality of the English dub, but they do have it. First season's on Netflix (if you don't have Crunchyroll); second season's a lot shorter: it covers a much shorter arc from the manga. It's still just on Crunchyroll in the US.
