Thumb's up is fine. We know what that means.
However in some parts of the world, SE Asia and eastern Europe, that gesture means "up yours!"
The "OK" gesture to us means "^sshole" in Asia and Europe.
Extension of the pinkie finger in SE Asia means you want a hooker.
Bottom line is don't make gestures toward people.

When I developed fingering games for my class piano students who did not have access to a piano outside of class for practice, you recall I was reprimanded by administration for both teaching and encouraging obscene gestures, and explaining gestures have different meanings in different parts of the world. The lesson was in response to gestures involving finger #3 and possibility kids would use it with the alibis they were practicing finger dexterity for piano.
Don't make gestures toward people. Your practice of that is a good habit.
