visible to one another. However, the next closest Island is New Zealand, with is approximately 100 miles away. Other major lands are upwards of 1,000 miles away.
Unfortunately, the article says they were at least 60 miles away, but does not specify exactly where they are referring to. I couldnt find anything that is close to 60 miles from Australia. Land is either within a couple of miles or it's nearly 100 miles to the closest named land mass.
No matter the distance, if the humans couldn't see the distant land, then they either HAD to leave or the chose to take a trip to unknown lands. Researchers are saying that it was not accidental discovery. It was deliberate sea travel for unknown reasons. Without preparation and supplies, survival would be unlikely.
