Total Deaths: More than 340 people have died climbing the mountain over the last century.

Remaining Bodies: Around 200 unrecovered corpses still lie frozen across the slopes.

The Death Zone: Most bodies remain above 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) where low oxygen and extreme weather make recovery dangerous and expensive.


I talked to a guy once who summitted Everest. He said one of the guys in his party did not make it, but that they were able to retrieve the body later.

I'd guess those who (attempt to) climb it know the risks. I may have been tempted to do something like that in my younger years, too, but stepping over or around dead bodies does not appeal to me, either. I suppose people rationalize it by saying "he died doing what he loved..."
