Valued Poster I watched Laurel and Hardy, then got into Harold Lloyd and the Marx Bros., then the Stooges. Never saw a lot of these guys, nor Chaplain or Keaton either for that matter (shame on me!). Some Abbott & Costello. Such a golden age of comedy, though, largely thanks to Vaudeville. RESIST!

My ex-wife was a HUGE fan, much more than me. I just enjoyed the absurdity. I had never HEARD of Harold Lloyd until our local PBS station started playing his films years ago. I’m like ‘Who IS this guy?’ My parents remembered him, of course. Like Keaton, he did a lot of his own stunt work. My ex also loved W.C. Fields, who was also brilliant. His loathing of children and pets made him a great curmudgeon. And let’s not forget Mae West! Press: ‘Miss West, do you smoke after sex?’ Mae: ‘I don’t know, I’ve never looked…’ RESIST!

I loved the Stooges too! My favorite was Curly. My parents didn't much like them and didn't want us watching them, me in particular since I was young enough to think their stunts were harmless and maybe try to copy them. (Bud & Cynthia told me they were staged, which only made it more fun for me since I first thought they were far too mean to each other and didnt much care for them.) However, my folks weren't home for a bit and 2 of my siblings were taking care of me so we all watched them together. They let me watch with the agreement that I wouldn't tell on them.

Shemp was very good; he’d been the third Stooge in Vaudeville, but didn’t want to do movie shorts, so Curly took the job. After Curly eventually had a stroke, Shemp came to their aid again and did some funny stuff. He looked a lot like Moe. RESIST!

I just recently watched the one with Cagney - can't remember what it was called - and enjoyed it thoroughly. Feel free to disagree. Everyone has the right to be wrong - Even me.

I remember them most as Bowery Boys. When I was a kid I used to watch them on late Sunday Mornings, before football at noon. One of our 3 local stations would air the Bowery Boys movies as well as, Laurel and Hardy, Stooges , Marx Bros, Little Rascals, Abbott and Costello, Old Classic Comedy etc. I always thought of the boys as grown up rascals and they reminded me of my uncles and their friends. " Valued Poster I used to watch them on cable in MO, but haven't had or wanted cable since then. Youtube has a pretty good variety, but alas, none of the best of the best. You can find Cary Grant, but not The Philadelphia Story, for example. Anyway, yes, all of those were part of my childhood too. Also, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and Mae West. Today's movies are tech marvels and acting wizards, but the innocence and charm of the old ones still has value. Feel free to disagree. Everyone has the right to be wrong - Even me.
