Radio 4 is available on FM, DAB, and there have been some posts saying that in some areas of Scotland DAB is available and FM isn't, BBC Sounds, smart speakers, Freeview, Virgin and Sky.
The BBC said in 2012 they would be closing longwave at some point in the future. They also said that as backup if the longwave transmitter was considered end of life they'd transfer the RTS system to 5 Live.
BBC Radio Five Live and Talksport still use Droitwich, in May 2022 the BBC said 5 Live would close by December 2027 at the latest. Both Talksport and the BBC will have audience figures for how many are still listening on AM so that date may be delayed.
As to housing estates estimates of the current shortfall are in the millions.

Why not replace the power hungry & worn out old TX, with a smaller - say 50kw solid state TX, with many now redundant, potential scrap - they would cover much of the existing area, be it meters or Audio listeners - it's a really wonderful aerial system at Droitwich.
I suspect the real truth in all this, is the TX site is earmarked for a huge housing estate - handy for Birmingham & by the M5
