Amateur Radio - The RSGB is marking the event:
Join us to mark BBC Radio 4 198kHz longwave closedown
Communications Officer | June 19, 2026
The RSGB, together with the BBC Amateur Radio Group, will be marking the closure of BBC Radio 4’s longwave service on 198kHz.
The longwave transmitting stations at Droitwich in Worcestershire, Westerglen near Stirling in Scotland, and Burghead—overlooking the Moray Firth and also in Scotland—will all be closed down on Saturday, 27 June 2026.
The special event station GB1500M will be active from Sunday, 21 June until Sunday, 28 June.
Three radio clubs will also commemorate the closure by activating special call signs.
A commemorative QSL card is available.
You can find out more by going to our web page dedicated to the shutdown at rsgb.org/longwave-transmitters, where you can also find out how to become a GB1500M activator.

Seems to have gone very quiet on the forum. Only 4 days to go. Possible retune loop for a few days after this. LW will then be silent in western Europe by day. Weak DX reception possible from Poland on 225 KHZ and Algeria on 252 which can be quite strong during winter months but nothing much during the summer. We will find out if there's anything that's been hidden under 198 KHZ next winter but nothing listed anywhere near Europe. Possibly Russia or even further afield for the determined DXer.
Russia closed all it's longwave transmitters bar one in January 2014, Radio Kavkez closed later that year.
Current longwave transmitters and long list of those that have closed here.
