The swing bridge foundations are exactly where the romans built theirs. Same foundations. Also Robert Curthose, who built the first castle and was eldest son of William the Conqueror, got his surname from curtailed (short) and hose being legs. He had bowed legs due to spending a lot of time in the saddle. The first castle was built of wood and was sited in now Collingwood St. It didn't last long so Henry II had the new one built designed by a Frenchman named Maurice
