Monkchester was an unusual name as no monasteries are believed to exist in the area when it was named although a number friary, priories and nunneries appeared after the Norman occupation. Pandon seemed to be more important after the Romans left and a number of Northumbrian kings used Pandon Hall as a residence, Pandon was absorbed in Newcastle by the late 1200s, Pandon was situated approximately where the law courts are on the quayside heading towards the Ouseburn.
