Thank you Norman, I wasn't aware of those changes, the Romans certainly played a big part. Northern England has such a wide and varied history, so many Europeans settling there, I worked in a greenhouse at one time, and happened to mention in my Tyneside accent 'Bairns' my boss who is Danish was amazed and told me that is the Danish word for children, imagine all the words in the English language that still linger from other countries.
