A piece of info about Newcastle's previous 2 names

0ur local Tyneside city Newcastle originally grew around a Roman settlement called Pons Aelius so took on that name.
Years later it became Monkchester.
Then later again when the Castle was built in 1080 by William the Conqueror's eldest son, Robert Curthose it took on the name of Newcastle.

Imagine if the Castle hadnt been built?
Newcastle United would have been 'Pons Aelius United' or 'Monkchester United'

The swing bridge foundations are exactly where the romans built theirs. Same foundations. Also Robert Curthose, who built the first castle and was eldest son of William the Conqueror, got his surname from curtailed (short) and hose being legs. He had bowed legs due to spending a lot of time in the saddle. The first castle was built of wood and was sited in now Collingwood St. It didn't last long so Henry II had the new one built designed by a Frenchman named Maurice

Monkchester was an unusual name as no monasteries are believed to exist in the area when it was named although a number friary, priories and nunneries appeared after the Norman occupation. Pandon seemed to be more important after the Romans left and a number of Northumbrian kings used Pandon Hall as a residence, Pandon was absorbed in Newcastle by the late 1200s, Pandon was situated approximately where the law courts are on the quayside heading towards the Ouseburn.

The area of the Castle Keep was important long before the Keep was built, a dugout canoe funeral was discovered when the post office building was being constructed and a church was in the area possibly on the Keep area. When the roads and pavements were worked on in the 1970s over 600 burials were discovered in the vicinity of the Keep, it's been assumed that there's many more as a lot of the area is built on and inaccessible. There was a collapsed drain heading towards the High Level Bridge a few years back and workers discovered a mother and child burial. There's still more to be discovered in the city and beyond.

Thank you Norman, I wasn't aware of those changes, the Romans certainly played a big part. Northern England has such a wide and varied history, so many Europeans settling there, I worked in a greenhouse at one time, and happened to mention in my Tyneside accent 'Bairns' my boss who is Danish was amazed and told me that is the Danish word for children, imagine all the words in the English language that still linger from other countries.

I remember someone getting off the Aeroplane in Norway & saw a sign 'OOT GAN' which Geordies use when they are 'gannin oot' for the night

Norman in Norway there are signs on the marina jetty - max fart 5 knots. The Norwegian word means speed!

Anne, I to worked for Danes and whilst the Danish language is difficult to speak and write it is amazing how many of the same words are used in the English and Danish language.

Liz it is the same with Norwegian. I went to classes when I lived there although a good way to do it too is buy a local paper! My teacher said a baby does not translate so nor will she. Liv wouldn't use English in the class. It was hard at first but we got there using our Janet and John kids style books.
