Another from the brilliant 'Britain from above' website. I've added the locations to help .
I probably had this on before, but new visitors wont have seen it.

Absolutely amazing the number of houses that have been built since that time,what is sad is the loss of industry and jobs !

I think I am correct in saying that the Mill Farm ( Moncton) is now The Cock Crow Inn, also I lived at 1 Blue House Road during the war (not built at time of picture) so they must have been new !

YES Malcolm,
Monkton Mill Farm became the 'Cock Crow Inn'.
The name came from the 'Cock Crow Island' that was in the middle of the Tyne. When Mr Andrew Leslie came to build ships in the mid 1800s it had to be removed as it was an obstruction for launching ships..

Hi Malcolm,Put your glasses on for this 1670 map of our river.
Ive added a couple of pieces of info to help anyone figure out where Leslies was in later yeras. As you can see there was a few islands/sand banks in the river in those days.

No. 1 Blue house would have been built early 1939 as Mum &Dad moved into 16 Crawley in June 1939.

I assume that the builder worked down from the top of Blue House, Lambley Cres. However why leave the gap to be filled later by council houses.

Maybe they built Crawley etc first then up Blue house.

I wonder if there were more than one builder as the design of the houses differed. The house on Crawley on the Blue House side next to Titlington Grove was different.

Maybe they built builder of Lambley Cres was different and didn’t finish Lambley due to the start of the war.

On Crawley There was a gap left 18 & 20, however they built 22& 24, which was a different design, similar but different.

I wonder why they left the gap possibly 14, 16, 22& 24 had buyers and the start of the war stoped things resulting in 18& 20 not being built.

In 22 was Bob Rowntree the model aircraft chap, I seem to remember he built a big plane about 5-6foot wingspan and it was RED. He started me off building flying models.

I didn’t know this until the late 1950’s, but some of those built in Crawley Avenue we rented. I one of the landlords had a pork pork butchers in a Jarrow.

I wonder if you’re right, I would probably never know as ours was bought in 1939.

I know that my mother in law had considered buying one but they were too small (not enough bedrooms) for parents and 4 daughters and a bit too far from their work places.

In the back of my mind the cost of a two bedroom was £290 in 1939. Never been able to verify that though.

I did know one family who rented. I was surprised when they left as an elderly couple for a council bungalow. Im not sure how you spell the name of the landlord, but it sounds like Gilhurst( not correct spelling). I believe they owned a few properties.

On the photo, there is a substantial line running diagonally from what would become Crawley Avenue, running up, to the right, into the Cemetery, seemingly cutting off the lower right-hand corner of the Cemetery. The substantial wall (that borders "The Cut") seems to stop at that point.

Now I KNOW that the Cemetery is roughly square shaped, and the High wall ran to that lower right-hand corner, then turned 90 degrees, running right to left, parallel to what would be Queens Crescent.

So the daft question(s) was the Cemetery smaller, back then?
And the wall extended, to make it square-ish?

And what IS that line? Too big to be a hedge, comparing other hedges in the photo...

I suspect that the Cemetery was being enlarged and that corner wall was being built.

The hedge line from Mill Lane to Burn Heads farm probably became Crawley Ave.

It looks like the access to the farm was that curved line maybe!

What’s happening at the allotments and Cemetery is anyone’s guess as photo not that good.

I cannot remember if Burn Heads farm was still there in 1947 when we used to play in the fields.

I remember a hedge with possibly a dried up stream going diagonally about 100 yards from the then end of Crawley Ave. we had a Den there. We got into trouble for going there off our parents.

Pity all a bit vague now.

Hear what you are saying Allan, but why build an "odd" shaped Cemetery, then extend it, to make it square..just make it square..

Burn Heads Farm is just about inline with the Cemetery wall, which places it around about where the 2 schools are, so Crawley Avenue is off to the left on the photo...

Your comment about a hedge & dried up stream holds water (Yes, pun WAS intended!) going diagonally from the end of Crawley Avenue....

So had to be cleared/drained to finish the Cemetery?

Grasping a bit here......

Does anyone know when the Cemetery was..errr..Built? Or dug? Established?

The Cemetery was in use 1921 to 1928 as both my Campbell great grandparents buried there.

Just checked, it opened in 1890. The website gives a lot of info. That’s New to me. Look at it.

Maybe there was a problem with the founds to the walls in that area and had to be rebuilt?
