The Higher Grade School's name was later changed to Jarrow Central School.

Hi Colin I found the school on findmypast while doing my family history, I was told many years ago that one of my aunts attended what was called
the technical school but I couldnt find it until yesterday, it must have been very modern for its time as she was born in 1909

The Grange school was not for senior aged children but the Central School was.

In my school days, Children who passed the 1st half of the '11 plus' exams qualified for the Central School. Those that passed both halves qualified for the Grammar School.

Norman, that is how I remember it. I don’t know how true this is, I read it many years ago. Most children that sat the 11plus had passed both parts, but as there was not enough Grammar school places, the powers who were in charge had to decide which school the students would go to. Whether technical or academic.

When I took my 11 plus in 1961 there were too many passes to go to Jarrow Grammar, for some reason the powers that be created what they called an X stream at Clegwell, it was the first of its kind, as a consequence some of us were sent to Clegwell. I think where you lived contributed to where you were sent as I plus a few others who lived in Bill Quay, Pelaw and Wardley were sent to Clegwell.

I sat my 11+ in 1950. As I understood the results of the exam of those who got 120 marks out of 200 were recorded in numerical order of correct answers. The Grammar School got the number of pupils they wanted off the top. The Central School got their number next. Any left at the bottom didn't pass. Maybe that's how Clegwell got their special class years later.

I think the 120 out of 200 was the cut off line for the first part of the 11+

I sat my 11 plus around 1951-52. only 7 of us passed to go to Grammar School. At that time we had to travel to Sunderland from Hebburn for our nearest
Grammar School St. Anthony's. Margaret's idea that children were picked in alphabetical order after getting 120 out of a possible 200 marks seems wrong as my surname began with S and I was one of the seven.

I dont think I said alphabetical and if I did it as a mistake. The results of the exam would be in their order of correctness ie numerical and then the top however many would go to the grammar School first. Incidentally I wasn't referring to RC Grammar Schools as I have no knowledTge of that. I was thinking state schools ie non RC. Sorry for the confusion.

Marie, I think each Catholic school must have been given so many places as St Anthony’s covered a large area of schools. I can only remember three girls going to St Anthony’s the year before you, but quite a few went to St Beads in Jarrow. I remember about 6/8 girls chosen for extra tuition at one side of the classroom and the others, including me were told to take outs book and read. Sadly we thought we were the lucky ones.

Hi Sheila hope all is well with you. St. Aloysius turned out a lot of well educated children in our time. We did our best no matter how they arrived at exam results. I was thankful to pass but a lot of girls were disappointed. As you say too few places allotted. Talk soon.

My sister Lydia and I went to the Jarrow Central School. She did the Commercial stream . I did the General stream and then went to Jarrow Grammar for A Levels.
