Grey food bins!

It appears these food waste bins are appearing all over the UK. People in Hartlepool are not using them as thet have to pay for the sacks so the waste food ends up in the large bins. My source also tells me theres a surge in rats and residents have vandalised the bins in protest. Well here in Liverpool we are getting the same problems. However airtight, rats can detect food. Where do these council idiots aquire brains? Mind you, I have witnessed 3-4 foxes with brains acually get into a wheelie bin! As for food bins, we'll see how long that lasts! I have a vhs video of binmen which my ex brother in law filmed...hard working men carrying hot ash...

I cannot see how these food bins will work from a practical viewpoint - it reminds me 'back in the day' when the 'pig man' came to collect from the New Town school.
We live in Whickham and we have had no information from Gateshead Council as yet.

We've had a food waste bin (but it's green!) since we moved up here in 2019.
It sits in the kitchen, on the work-top, and is the size of a loaf.
And you buy the liner, which is bio-degradable. So far, so good.
But we have so little waste, after maybe 4-5 days, decided to empty it.
As I lifted the liner (with contents) it's already started to degrade, and left the contents (tea bags, peeling etc) in the bottom of the bin...
Hmm THIS isn't working....
So the bin was destined for another bin!
End of!!!!

Our local council issued every house with a Green lid Wheelie bin for Garden waste and with it came a little Green lid bin for Kitchen waste, like Malcolm, it has little biodegradable baggies that have to be bought from the Council, ours sits on the garden work bench.........totally unused !!.......No rats in my garden.

As I said, these bins were here in Scotland pre-2019... and binned post 2019..just!!

No word, as yet, from Herefordshire Council, to be honest any potato peelings, banana skins and the like go into a small bin that sits on the worktop, my husband takes the bin to our compost heap about every 2 days on his return he washes out the small bin with bleach then that goes back inside the little bin that sits on the worktop, so from our point of view we most certainly do not need another bin.

Colin, if you are concerned about hygiene the answer is how a person keeps the bin clean, our bin, not the councils bin, is less than a foot high, it has an air tight top, the inner bin which is where our small amount of food waste goes is cleaned out with bleach and/ or disinfectant every 2 days, we never put food waste in the bin that would attract rodents.

I know we all have issues with the various bins and other garbage receptacles, however we should spare a thought for our Japanese friends who must sort out their garbage even further ...... Newspapers...Glossy magazine type papers...Glass bottles...Plastic bottles...Aluminium cans (soft drink)...Cans (Food containers)...wrappers removed from P.E.T. bottles... Household products (broken furniture etc. All of these items have different collection days and MUST be put out at the CORRECT pick up point and ONLY within certain hours, some council areas require additional sorting and wrapping as per very strict written instructions.

Indeed Stan, Their Garbage trucks are so clean you could eat your dinner off them.....literally !!...Their streets are very clean too, no littering, rubbish bins were removed from the streets after the Sarin Gas attack and everybody takes their rubbish home to be disposed of correctly. The Japanese Recycling Industry is above First World Levels, very little is wasted and put in land fills. Woe betide anyone seen by ""Mrs. Little old lady next door"" putting something next to the garbage collection area on the wrong day or at the wrong time, the entire street will hear about it, and you'll never live it down.

York Rd in Hartlepool is Chuddy St! The pavements are nearly white with chewing gum! About 10 yrs ago, an old lady was fined for dropping wool from her glove onto the pavement! True and it caused a riot. And theres enough cork from discarded dod ends to make a few life jackets!!!...
