Colin, if you are concerned about hygiene the answer is how a person keeps the bin clean, our bin, not the councils bin, is less than a foot high, it has an air tight top, the inner bin which is where our small amount of food waste goes is cleaned out with bleach and/ or disinfectant every 2 days, we never put food waste in the bin that would attract rodents.
