For many Muslim women
wearing hijab is an active choice, or just tradition. Some women wearing hijab may be uncomfortable because they know that they are going to get othered doing so. I can't deny that there is a heavy patriarchal element to it, but for a religion with over a billion adherents you're gonna get over a billion reasons for wearing hijab. Islamic dress in general is more conservative than usual, though no more so than the clothing of the Amish. There is also heavy cultural variation. In some areas women walk around with literally just a thin sheet covering some of their hair, while wearing skinny jeans and a tank-top. Believe it or not, only a minority of Muslim women wear the burka or the niqab. Men are also expected to wear conservative clothing, although obviously not to the extent of women, at least in some cultures.
