Just went through this.
My tank went out... it was a "cheap" replacement when we bought the house. But it was also a "powervent"? So apparently it was almost as expensive to replace as getting a tankless. The work to retrofit the hosue to support a regular non-powervent tank would be almost impossible. The quote I had for a cheap replacement powervent was like $5500. A tankless with a water softener (which is basically manditory, and I didn't have one) was $6500. To me the extra $1000 was a no brainer.
