That doesn’t change the fact that the GoT TV writers completely lost the plot once going off book, but I do think it was going to be hard to land the plane no matter what.
I agree that fans of the TV shows did want more of the dragons and white walkers in theory, but you then eventually have to confront the reality of there being no plausible scenario where those forces wouldn’t completely overwhelm everything else that you’ve spent time getting invested in..

I agree it’s impossible to balance the political intrigue with the dissonance that the dragons could destroy everything whenever the characters want. But I think the dragons are there because that’s what the masses want and that is what has driven the late GoT and HotD storylines Previous Message
…is that the majority of the non-book reader TV show fans liked the medieval political intrigue part of the story way more than the fantasy part of the story.
And with HotD in particular, it’s really hard to insert CGI of people literally riding on dragons into a dialogue-driven show while still trying to keep the suspension of disbelief that is required for a show like this. When they can just burn all their enemies in a matter of minutes if they wanted to, it’s hard to make it feel like anything else matters.
