It took Mendenhall, Vontae, Benn, Martez, five more NFL picks and a bunch more 4-stars...Archived Message

Just to pull off that 9-4 season in 2007 — the school's best record in 20-plus years.
So you need half a staff with the recruiting chops of Zook, Locksley, Reggie, etc., you need half a staff with great coaching chops, you need a Top 25 NIL budget and you need a relatively weak conference schedule.
And that's just to give yourself better than a 50 percent chance to finish in the B1G's upper division.

you can mold a pretty decent mid-level B1G team with slightly better recruiting to where we are now (let's say 5 4-stars and the rest 3-stars with multiple P5 offers). but even at that level, you are so far behind OSU, michigan, penn state, USC, oregon (plus all the top teams not in the conference) that you're really not even playing for the same thing.
you either recruit in the top 10 or you just play to have a good time.

Gunther/Richter both football players. But... here we are.
Old argument; nothing will happen in my lifetime. But JFC, at least TRY .

but we hired Ron Guenther (while Wisconsin hired Pat Richter), and we ain’t overcoming the last 30 years at this point. We are what we are - a bottom feeder who will occasionally fall up the stairs to a decent bowl game.
But we were never becoming Michigan or Ohio State, and without a Phil Knight type figure we weren’t becoming Oregon, either.
