Would I be more optimistic about the future if they had fired Eberflus? Sure. But this is still the best outlook the Bears have had in a long time, and I don’t think anyone outside of Bears fans is really seeing this as being some kind of egregious move. He had an intentionally non-competitive roster in year 1 and then showed tangible improvement in year 2. This isn’t like when they kept Nagy around despite that ship already sinking.
The coordinator hires are a big concern for sure, but let’s see what happens there. (Shut up, narrator)
And I certainly don’t think they’ll draft Drake Maye and keep Fields. If they stick at #1 they’ll pick Caleb and they’ll find a trade partner for Fields.

2024: bears take maye at #1 and keep fields. new OC has never coached offense before and it's an even bigger disorganized mess than this year. 7-10 and they trade fields next offseason for a 4th.
2025: maye comes out and we get serious "uh oh" vibes. they fire flus after a 6-11 season and bring in a QB guru of a head coach.
2026: there are some flashes, but mostly poor play. the defense has aged out into free agency and they struggle to 4-13. "he just needs another year in the system. look at *this* throw and *this* play". they bypass another great QB prospect in the draft.
2027: "maye is really picking up the system" in the offseason. start 5-3, maye looks decent. "maybe he is the one." but then maye gets hurt and they struggle to 6-11. "if he had just stayed healthy, this is a playoff team." maye gets an extension.
2028: maye fully reveals he's fools gold and now he's under a top 10 QB contract. 2nd in the league in picks. bears win 5 games again and the coach is fired.
2029: ...."we just need to hire the right coach to maximize maye...."
