My thoughts on the EV6 (I assume they apply to its twin, the Ioniq 5, but I've never driven one) Archived Message

I'm a pretty big fan of this car. I've rented one at least three times, once to take a 200 mi round trip for work in Boston and twice to go around town. I think Hertz rents the Wind, which is the lowest of their range. The car drives well and I think (except for towing) EVs are much better to drive than an equivalent gas car. They offer low NVH, high straight line performance, and often pretty good handling because of the physics of a low center of gravity. The EV6 has all of these attributes, even in Wind form, which I believe is RWD. It has a very roomy interior because it is a dedicated EV platform. Flat floor front and rear, lots of space in the back for mini, who is a hair taller than 6' now. Plenty of luggage space for a large bag, a large roll-aboard, and three backpack-sized bags. The interior is also a nice place to spend time. It has nice materials and colors, even at this low end. Soft touch materials all around. It also had a lot of safety features and even a basic self-driving feature (lane keeping). A word about Korean cars: they have a lot of features and they absolutely let you know about them. They're the vegans of cars. Too many chimes and bongs and bells and they are really aggressive with them. It was very cold in Pittsburgh this weekend - never got above 31 F I don't think. So range was curtailed a little and we had to drive around town (at least the South Hills to the North Shore) quite a bit. Even then, it wasn't much different than having a gas rental - we ended up fueling up before we returned it. Spent about 20-30 minutes at the Target to do so. One note about renting EVs: I think that renting an EV is probably the worst possible situation for charging unless you know your destination will have AC/Level 2 charging for overnight charging. That said, it's very doable if you have the PlugShare app and other similar knowledge. The biggest problem is that you may be in an unfamiliar place, with an unfamiliar car, and you don't know where you are going to be able to charge. Also, because you'll probably end up DC Fast Charging, you'll probably not achieve fuel cost savings. I ended up charging it up at a DCFC at the end of the trip to comply with Hertz's policy of requiring you to return with 75% charge. I got the car with 90% charge and probably would have had about about 10% when I returned it if I hadn't charged. Would have been a lot easier if I had stayed with my friends (3-4 of whom have home charging) or a hotel with AC charging. But Mrs. ATL had a miscommunication with a friend about our staying there and we ended up in a hotel without AC charging.
