I wish we could just agree that all pizza is good, and even mediocre pizza is pretty good. That being said, I've had some truly divine pizza, it's just never been in New York. I had some great Detroit style pizza over the weekend.

A plain New York slice is dough, cheese, and sauce. The range of flavor across the thousands of options is just not that big. Yes, I have my favorites. Yes, there are small differences. But pizza is just not that complex of a dish. “This New York pizza place that was recommended to me is overrated.” Is it overrated, or is it just pizza?

It's less than 3 blocks from: Joe's Pizza John's of Bleecker Street L'Industrie Mama's Too Village Square (unranked but WAAAY underated).
with the exception of village square, all of these places are listed in top 20 places to get a slice or pie regardless of source / publication.
