Based on some rantings below, IJKA comes up with his playoff proposal:

Issues with the existing order are numerous... here's my attempt to solve some of this.

Basic rules:
- 28 team playoff
- Every conference gets to participate
- Each conference has a set number of guaranteed slots: 4 for the B1G and SEC, 3 for the ACC and Big 12.
- Conferences are 100% responsible for identifying their selected
- The G5 (G6 next year with the Pac-12 'restarting') each get 1 guaranteed slot.
- There are 6 at-large spots available to the P4 conferences + Notre Dame. No more than 2 spots can go to any given conference
- There are 3 (2 next year) at-large spots available to the G5/6 schools, no more than 1 per conference for these.
- G5/6 conferences are expected to complete their conference championship games on Thanksgiving Weekend, in exchange Week 0 is expanded to include games played in G5/6 stadia (along with existing international and FCS games)
- The 8 G5/6 schools selected for the playoff get seeds 21-28 and play a preliminary round the first week in december, with 4 teams advancing to the main draw
- The top 8 overall seeds get a bye to the 2nd round.
- The remaining 12 teams play the 4 G5/6 winners in the "First Round".

Based on that, here's my bracket for 2025:

Considerations:
- Why only 2 additional at-large per conference? Well it seems like 6 teams for the SEC/Big Ten is more than enough and helps prevent poll bias. This year it means Houston gets tossed out and Vanbertilt gets put in. This probably is a win in terms of viewership and entratinment value bu I'm sticking with my proposal.
- Why is Duke in? The ACC decided with FIVE!! teams tied for 6-2 that Duke was the best, and they won the title game, therefore the ACC decided 8-5 Duke is the best team in the league. Talk to them, I didn't make that choice.
- How did you choose the 3 G5 at larges below? North Texas and UNLV seemed deserving enough. I pulled up Jeff Sagarin's website and squinted at it and picked ODU out of a hat. Go ahead and pick someone else if you'd like.
- Why not make Notre Dame play in the G5 round since they aren't in a conference Honestly? they are a power school and if you put them in the G5 group they're pretty much guaranteed to be better than the 2nd best runner up every single year, meaning they are guaranteed to be in the playoff every year.
- How do conferences choose teams: I don't know man, up to them. I really don't care, but I wouldn't recommend emulating the ACC. The Big Ten talked about having a 3vs6 and 4vs5 game to settle the final two spots. That could be compelling TV... Iowa winning at Oregon would have put them into the playoff this year, but at the same time you could lose an at-large team if they get smacked around.
- What about the ~waves arms~ rest of college football? Good question. I think you'd still have demand for bowl games or some sort of posteason for everyone else that's used to it... at least from a TV standpoint. I doublt you'd get more than 5-10,000 fans in an MLS stadium... you could try and do 4 team tournaments (semi's on campus, finals someplace warm) to spice it up.

I don't think you can feasibly expand the playoff much beyond what is outlined above though...

Is there still a committee sadly yes, but some of their guesswork is taken from them... ultimately they select 8-9 teams and then line everyone up. I thought about giving seeding preference to conference champs, or a guaranteed bye to P4 champs... but.. well, Duke.

they've been playing football since August, they are past the point of diminishing returns on practices. they need time off to reflect on how to improve more than they need the practices.

making the bowl is a big deal, having recruits visit during the practices in say 2010 when there was one signing day in February was an advantage vs not being in a bowl, but there's no correlation between those extra practices and the team being better the next year.

i'm just tired of that nonsense for today. no one is getting better enough in the next 15 practices for it to matter. i don't care what the coaches say about it. it's not real.

a lot of this stuff is backwards looking (survivorship bias) and is impossible to quantify. i would argue after 5 months of high intensity football, no one on the team is going to get a lot out of another 15 practices. it certainly not a cure for what ails us.

despite the 15 extra practices last year, our record was worse this year. how much did it help?

Further along you get with the top 4-8-16-whatever teams, the more the "first team out" people aren't going to care about the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl (or whatever).

Then, toss in the "oh, but we simply MUST invite the ugly girl down the road from a smaller, but no less worthy conference" and you're accelerating the process even more.

Eh. Most-if not all-of the bowls had a charity concept at their inception. That's gone by the wayside too.

Yep. I naively thought bowls could hang on until this year. But I think they're done.

- conferences get guaranteed numbers of teams based on performance (1 MAC, 4 B1G...)
- conferences are 100% responsible for choosing tteam(s). Dont like Duke, well that was the ACCs process
- G6 season starts on week 0 and their conference championship games are Thanksgiving weekend. This weekend is a preliminary round of the playoff for them so most get weeded out of the main draw... but they have a real, tangible path.
- you have a small number of at large bids.. I guess.

like a UEFA coefficient that constantly changes based on how the conferences perform? or a pre-negotiated number per conference? I could get down with the UEFA coefficient model.

- G6 season starts on week 0 and their conference championship games are Thanksgiving weekend. This weekend is a preliminary round of the playoff for them so most get weeded out of the main draw... but they have a real, tangible path.

what are you envisioning here? the top 4 G6 conference champs play to whittle them down to 2, and then those 2 make the main playoff? it's a little unfair to the better G6 teams, but it actually adds meaningful games for more teams and conferences.

UEFA, but set in advance of the year, and can be dickered with between seasons. Much like the current UEFA champions league format, it's heavily weighted to advantage the leagues with on-field success and off-field influence... but it still provides a path for the Champion of the Gibralter Football League to be champions of europe next year.

Correct, rather than sit around and decide whether to take Tulane or JMU.. (had the ACC not fucked this up royally), and justify why Kennesaw or WMU is left out...

KSU @ JMU
UNLV @ Boise St (different leagues next year)... those 3 move on to the main draw, everyone starts teh year with a real chance.

How did they manage to put together a unit that could consistently dominate the LOS and disrupt play for an elite team like OSU?

It’s not that unusual for mid-level teams to build top offensive lines. For whatever reason, seems like a lot of 3-star guys can be developed on that side of the ball and coached up into top units. Witness the extended periods of success Iowa, Wisky, Nebraska had doing that.

But the top d-line units in my recollection are almost always at the schools landing 30 5-star recruits per year—OSU, Georgia, Bama, LSU/Florida/FSU back in the day, etc.

So how did IU in 2 years get a unit that looked like one of the old SEC powers dominating an overmatched Big Ten team from the early BCS era? Is the defensive coordinator a wizard? Brilliant NIL transfer recruiting? Unbelievable luck? Or is OSU’s offensive line secretly trash and they just haven’t played anybody any good until now?

Insane what they are doing in football. Can’t stand their hoops, but good on their football. Jealous of what they have, but I think what Illinois is doing is right. From reading below, who cares about sustainability, they just won a B1G title & will be the #1 playoff seed.

Edit: Also had a HS teammate a million years ago who played at Indiana, so never had that strong hate for their football program.

A team like OSU winning the conference or making a playoff run or even winning it all doesn’t move the needle. They’ve done it before and they will do it again. OSU was a better program than us yesterday and will be a better program than us tomorrow.

Having another moribund program like Indiana leapfrogging us to become a title contender is objectively bad. Why would we want another team to move themselves above us in the pecking order? It’s a zero sum game. All that does us push us down.

Long TD on its first play and then scores on punt return, pick six and a 4-yard drive after one of the other ISU interceptions.

The Stats of War account would probably say ISU was 10+ points better and that would be right.
