Starting to think that Uncle Steve is meddling too much. This smacks of being on tilt and flies in the face of Stearns preaching an emphasis on run prevention. His stated plan does not line up with these moves.

This also makes me wonder if Baty has been getting valued above what they figured in the trade market. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the move. Which would suck.

But the Dodgers thing happening now is an exponentially bigger problem than the 2000’s Yankees. No one is enjoying this, and there are so many loopholes that it’s not even just a straightforward “we’re spending more than you” scenario.

A stoppage will do a lot of damage to the sport in the short-term, but something has to change. Problem is there’s no incentives for the players to opt out of this current system, unless they’re going to bring down the service time duration and let the best players get paid sooner.

isn’t sustainable for interest in the game.

There’s nothing wrong with a cap as long as there’s a floor and penalties for not spending revenue on payroll. To your point, I hope the players stand firm, but we’ve seen this movie before.

At this juncture, there’s no point in spending. Just wait for the 2027 work stoppage to reset everything.

Conrad has much more upside than Ballesteros and Wiggins is a pitcher with short track record.

Just hope the shoulder is alright. A healthy Conrad is probably the best prospect in the Cubs system including Caissie imo

He has some potential as a starter if he gets his fastball command.

Arenado is over the hill. He can still pick it at 3rd but his production is down both in terms of output and input with the bat.

And he’s a pure pull hitter. Basically a poor man’s Isaac Paredes.

He doesn’t strike out though.

Seems like perfectly reasonable deal on both ends. Cardinals were always gonna have to pay off a ton of money and Martinez is a solid return for it imo.

Arenado screwed both him and the Cards over when he turned down that deal to the Astros

Shaw will rotate in with Bregman at 3B and whoever is off will platoon with Moises at DH.

Don’t expect much from Shota and would expect a step back from Boyd, but if Steele can get back in form and if what Horton shared last year was real, then you don’t need to rely on them nearly as much. Very deep 5 man rotation.

I generally don’t think it’s a good idea for a big market team to pay the prospect capital that is required for ‘cheap years of control.’ This one feels a bit different because there could be some real untapped upside with this guy, but often what happens is you are the paying a price that is equivalent to what it would take to get a great player but are only getting a good player in return.

Verlander turned into something way better than expected after this trade, but I think back to the post-WS window for the Cubs in ‘17/‘18. The Cubs traded 2 elite prospects to get controllable years from a #2 or really good #3 starter in Quintana. The Astros gave up nothing of real significance and took on a lot of money for Justin Verlander, who went out and pitched at a Cy Young level for multiple years. That made them a real contender for years while the Cubs faded away, obviously with other factors contributing to that as well.

And if you’re a team like Tampa or Cincinnati who needs to operate around the margins financially, that makes a ton of sense. If your a team who SHOULD be able to actually afford paying for great players, it feels like you are giving up more than you should just to save money.

Obviously the reality here is that the Cubs do in fact need to value cheap years of control way more than they should, so in that sense I undetermined why Jed would do it. But it shouldn’t have to be that way.

Jose Quintana was a top 16 pitcher if fWAR for each of the 3 years before the Cubs acquired him. He was a top 20 pitcher by bWAR the 2 years before the Cubs acquired him.

You’re right that I undersold Quintana’s performance prior to the trade, though I did acknowledge that Verlander ended up being way better than anyone could have expected at the time of his trade. And it probably wouldn’t have happened that way if on the Cubs. Though I will note that Verlander was way better in 2016 and 2017 (pre-trade) than what was alluded to below, he was performing much better than Quintana.

And I liked Quintana and staunchly defended the trade on whatever iteration of this board existed at the time. But I was referring more to my mindset in 2018/2019 when Quintana accumulated 2.3 WAR across those two seasons while Verlander accumulated 13.7 WAR. And fully with the benefit of hindsight, I remember sitting there at the time thinking “damn, what if we just traded for Verlander and would not only have the better pitcher but also could have kept our two best prospects.”

It’s a sloppy example to use, but the bigger point is that for a team like the Cubs, I’d rather give up mid-level prospects for 1 year of a high-priced elite SP than give up elite prospects for 3 years of a good but not great SP. I’m supposed to be excited that it frees up money to make another signing, but that money should be there regardless.

In this case, I don’t think Cassie is an elite prospect and there’s reason to think that Cabrera could still turn into a top end guy. So for those reasons I am fine with this trade as long as we didn’t give up a ton else, I just generally think that “cost-controlled pitching” can get severely overvalued.

The market was low for him because he was mediocre and owed a ton of money.

Credit to the Astros for reviving his career. The Astros proved they are an elite development org at least during that time period.

Most orgs are probably not getting out of Verlander what the Astros got and there’s a huge reason why he went cheaply.

As to Quintana I think it’s dumb to relitigate it again but that trade was totally worth it. Q pitched the Cubs into the playoffs in 2017. The Cubs have literally won more games in the playoffs with Q than the Sox did with Eloy and Cease.

The Cubs won that trade. Eloy was mediocre and Cease was up and down and the Sox moved him for a mediocre return.

I agree that big market teams should spend and the Cubs should go out and get the best talent but that doesn’t mean that smart trades aren’t smart trades.

Guessing the Cubs offered more years lower AAV and no opt outs at least after the first.

I’m kind of meh on Imai (and I think the market reflects that) but the options are dwindling so it’s a bit disappointing to not this done. Unless they’re trading for like Cabrera I’ll probably be pretty disappointed in whatever they do pitching wise. Not a fan of Gallen.

they have several young promising position players, and next to no starting rotation (2025 team ERA 5.85). Gore, with 2 years of control left is the head of a group including Cade Cavalli (some are bullish), Josiah Gray (mostly bearish) and several Hail Marys and 6.00+ ERA inning eaters.

Maybe Gore has already made it clear he is not signing his first big contract in DC, no matter what. If that’s the case I guess you get whatever you can while he is healthy. But not trying to keep him seems like another step backwards.

The Cubs signed him to a minor league deal and he came to camp pumping 100.

He didn't quite throw that hard through the year more 98 but he was great.

He got paid by the Phillies with a 2 year $22 million. That's a lot for a reliever with very little track record of success.

I liked him a lot but as a Cub fan totally comfortable letting him walk for that.

We didn't call him Brad "The Animal Steel" Keller for nothing.*

I feel like they could still use the following:

-SP who can bolster the front of the rotation
-High leverage RP
-Power bat

However, in the last week there have been stories talking about Caissie for the third role and Jaxon Wiggins as a rotation piece. So my guess is that their intitial overtures to FAs in those categories hasn't been all that fruitful.

They really like Bregman but I'm not sure that they'll be able to beat out the top offers especially if Arizona decides to just jump the market. And he's shown he's willing to wait around for the right deal

Imai of course we have an idea of when will know which is in January with his deadline. There's a report out there today that the Yankees and Cubs are expected to be finalists.

As for Caissie I would certainly expect for him and Ballesteros to start off with shots in the DH or for Caissie in RF when Seiya is not playing RF.

I would be very surprised if Jaxon Wiggins is in their plans to be a rotation piece for the bulk of the year. Things can happen like the injuries last year that forced Horton up but Wiggins should spent much of at least the early part of the year in Iowa and perhaps even if comes up will be working out of the pen. They have been very clear they want to spend on pitching but will see if they are able to do it.

I'm very happy that Thielbar is back. He was excellent last year. Just hope not paying too much for him.

If Bregman falls through, wonder if they go toward Murakami or the other Japanese 3b*

that's not to say his information is wrong, and certainly not intending to attack you for posting it. On the contrary, it's likely coming straight from the horse's mouth. I think we’ve been in a weird middle ground since he’s been hired where he needed to compete every year while also remaking the fundamentals of the organization.

I think trading Nimmo was a good idea. It’s questionable whether it helps us *this year*, but shaving 2 years from Nimmo to Semien was smart.

We have really talented guys in the upper minors ready to contribute. It’s a risk to rely on them, but you can’t keep signing every 30 year old to long term mega deals. So I get his conundrum of trying to thread this needle, and it’s why I’m open on Alonso. If we miss on him the fans will revolt, but my reaction will be purely based on term. 3 years I’ll be pissed. 4 somewhere in the middle. 5 I think I’m good to say goodbye.

The Diaz one pisses me off strictly because the term was so reasonable. There’s no needle to thread there.
