…but the best solution they have for crossing life threatening crevices is to strap aluminum ladders together. This is redneck neighbors stuff, but it’s apparently the pinnacle of mountain climbing technology.

this is what he does. he's done it his entire adult life. his wife knew this about him when they first got together and accepted it/him.

if you're gonna say now that he has kids he should stop...I suppose an argument could be made. but if not doing it would make him miserable because this is what brings him joy then would that make him a better father?

The altered brain chemistry probably plays into it, but also the way he speaks is very spectrum-like - I imagine there's some of that going on there

covered a bit below, but only about 1/3rd of everest is in nepal, the rest is in tibet.

the only path up on the nepal side is via traversing a glacier (khumbu icefall) in a steep V-shaped valley. unfortunately, with it being a glacier, it has crevasses and it moves. there's no way to fix permanent routes or go around it

but once you get past it, this is the "easy" side to climb.

it's steep-walled mountain on either side with a glacier coming down the middle. and the glacier, being a glacier, moves. and the glacier, being a glacier, has crevasses.

the tibetan side has no icefall to contend with, but the top is much more technically difficult and it's obviously much more difficult to get a permit.
