The prospects of a deal appeared to darken over the weekend when the United Arab Emirates said Iran launched a missile attack on one of its ships and a top Iranian official laid out a series of tough demands for allowing traffic through.

The Fox poll is concerning but I've seen a lot of horrible polls lately. What I think is encouraging is Stevens and the Dem establishment seems like they're going to back him (or at least not try to kill his campaign).

If they can help him shore up more conservative democrats (mostly black people), I think that will go a long way because I think he is going to put up Kim Jung Il type numbers in Dearborn, college campuses and smaller cities.

That said, he's a better candidate by every qualifiable analysis. The only problem is his name, and what it implies. (Okay, and his beard, too. But that implies the same thing.)

The thing I wonder about is how the "should we Americanize the candidate" debate played out *within* the El-Sayed campaign.

So it’s reported that when Trump was leaving Turkey with a credible threat against him, they not only made him take the old AF1 instead of his Qatar jet but squirreled him (and maybe a few others?) away to yet another plane and had everyone else (staff and journalists) stay on old AF1 as a decoy, with no one knowing Trump wasn’t aboard.

Seems kinda shitty—obviously it was thought that AF1 was in enough peril that they didn’t want Trump on there, but if it’s that dangerous, why is it ok for everyone else to be subjected to that risk, especially without their knowledge?

And if all of the above is true, it does suck but—it wouldn’t have been Trump’s decision, would it? Feels like it would have been the Secret Service? Like people are ragging Trump about it but it doesn’t seem like this was some dastardly plan of his.

I mean I could understand why people like Tapper are outraged that the plane was used as decoys but obviously the plans will always prioritize the safety of the president.

I’d guess that if he wanted to Trump could have changed the plans but I doubt Trump would give a crap about anyone but himself.

It also seems pretty likely that Iran is trying to kill him! I’d be more surprised if there weren’t credible threats against his life coming from Iran especially when he’s in the Mideast.

Romer is a full on Communist, the head of something called, I believe, Red Star, which she describes as a Marxist-Leninest caucus within DSA, working to abolish capitalism and establish communism.

That in itself might be a minor problem, except she's also national co-chair of DSA. Not sure how that happened, but it needs to be undone. Apparently a number of local chapters are pulling away because of it.

I'm glad she's leading the charge toward communism. It ensures that it'll never happen.

...and thus will need to decide. The commish said she will form a task force. Now that can be a typical task force that runs forever and never does anything - I've been on those - but I don't think the world will move on. Unless we've reached peak WNBA interest, and this and other problems will send the WNBA downward and nobody cares what they do.

The commish has many problems before her, externally and internally, and the league is largely run by the players, it appears, and they even have this bizarre policy that gives the players even more influence: "our player eligibility rules, unlike the eligibility rules of some other leagues and governing bodies, are collectively bargained."

Iran is still lobbing missiles and blowing up ships, Israel is acting unilaterally, and we're... not doing anything.

Except continuing to declare victory and declare that the strait is open. One question- if the strait is open, why do these tankers keep blowing up?

I would call these three things "readiness", i.e. you have to have them to be ready to fight. personnel costs also include retiree pay and benefits.

Procurement, i.e. buying more munitions and R&D are about 33% of the budget together.

big problem with trying to buy more munitions is that the money is not appropriated by Congress and i think they just went on recess again. the President can jump up and down and do cartwheels about how he needs more missiles but nothing will happen until Congress appropriates the money. He can have his undersecretary say "you have 21 days, we mean it!" like he just did. he can announce $58b purchases. None of that matters until the money is appropriated; defense contractors won't assume the risk. I want to say it has been some crazy number, like 18 years, that Congress has failed to do a normal DoD budget on time that is two years out as required by law. that failure by Congress is part of the shortage problem; without defined purchasing requirements the big defense contractors are loathe to invest in more production than the bare minimum required to field and recycle the missiles (the missiles go bad over time.)

Seems that we have generally built the best stuff in the world, at great expense, and sold a lot of it to other countries in part because they figured that some level of US backing was part of the package. And part of the reason for that expense is spreading the production as widely as possible to get continued political support for the massive expense.

Now Trump is showing the world that we are an unreliable partner that can sell out a longtime ally for no particular reason. And Ukraine is showing the world how to make relatively cheap and effective weapons in great numbers despite the obstacles they face. I'm sure our military/industrial complex is thrilled to see European and Middle Eastern countries signing development deals with Ukraine. I assume the stuff we build will be even more expensive for us if we sell less of it to other countries.

Throwing another $58 Billion at Lockheed to make more should fix that.

Israel and Iran haven't attacked each other since June.

In fact the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain have struck inside of Iran more recently than Israel has and Iran has continuously lobbed missiles at them.

The US has been off and on with bombing campaigns since April with strikes in both June and July. I would assume at some point they resume airstrikes again but mostly they've kept Israel out of doing anything in regards to Iran.

Bibi said last week that they'll do it alone if need be. Also, Israel struck Iran in June*

In the medium to long term I definitely think AI is going to have revolutionary impacts, but I’m still skeptical that current market valuations make sense. And there’s a pretty huge concentration of the total S&P 500 index in a very small number of tech firms.

I guess it would be better for my retirement if the crash happens in the next couple of years rather than waiting until right after I retire.
