Watching both the Lorne and Martin Short documentaries was interesting

Martin Short clearly has some trauma from the movie as it didn’t do well and was panned on release as mentioned. It’s a movie from a bad period of his life making critically panned movies. He joked about how so many 40 year old men come up to him telling him how much that movie meant to them and only recently has he appreciated and stopped looking at them with a bit eye rolling or contempt.

On the other hand Lorne loudly brags about that movie as a success of his haha.

I don't think I've seen it. Probably because I paid money to see Spies Like Us the previous year.

I remember thinking it was not very good when it came out. Haven’t watched it since.

This comment works for both Spies like Us and Three Amigos.

I think Martin Short is pretty over-rated. Chevy Chase at least made Fletch and Caddyshack which were both great, even if the rest of his output was mediocre. (And yes, I’m including the Vacation movies.) Martin Short was an average SNL cast member for his time who somehow has a reputation as a great comic figure. He’s also insufferable to listen to in interviews.

Steve Martin, by contrast, is a legit national treasure.

I realize Martin Short is polarizing, so not really. But he and Steve are both in my comedy pantheon. Saw their live show a few years ago and absolutely loved it.

And the one season of SNL with Martin Short (and also the only one for Billy Crystal and Christopher Guest) was by far my favorite.

That SNL season gets a lot of grief for a number of reasons.

The big one is that they did a lot more pre-recorded stuff. Another is that people who like Lorne Michaels were angry about his ouster.

I liked it.
