Re: Hampden House ball
Unfortunately the photo from the ball is too blurry to actually see for sure who that lady in the back really are. She could of course be the hostess greeting her guest at the front door. But it is a bit funny that even before I saw your full photo where it was said that Crown Princess Märtha of Norway attended I thought maybe the lady could be the Norwegian Crown Princess. I don't know what made me think that because it is not easy to distinguish any special facial features. Maybe it was the tiara, thinking that it might be the Queen Josephine's diamond tiara. I don't know. But, as I said, it is impossible to say for sure based on that photo. Still, it is interesting to see that the newspaper mentioned the Norwegian Crown Princely couple being present at the ball.
I cannot find any direct information about who the lady is in the photo of Princess Marina entering Hampden House for the coronation ball in 1937.
Here is the full photo
The ball was given by the Duchess of Sutherland, who was described in the press as wearing a high tiara and a brocade gown. Perhaps the lady is the Duchess but, if so, she is not wearing her famous art deco tiara. Every body who was any body attended this ball. Not only was it a coronation ball but it was the first time a King or Queen had attended a ball in a private house since 1914 --according to the press. The King and Queen and Queen Mary attended.
Some other photos of the Duchess from the same era.
