Previous Message would a young Austrian woman from an affluent family have taken paid employment in the 1920s?
That's a very legitimate question. When I think of families I know: No! But on the other hand, studying at the Kunstgewerbeschule was not just an appropriate occupation for a young women to bridge the time until she got married. Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, the well known first female architect in Austria studied there between 1915 and 1919. Famous stage designer Alfred Roller, co-founder of the Salzburg Festival and responsible for the scenery of countless Max Reinhardt and Richard Strauss productions was director of the school between 1909 and 1934. Josef Hoffmann, Oskar Strnad, Michael Powolny were among the teachers in 1920. The school was closely connected to the equally famous Wiener Werkstätte. This was a very prestigious and ambitious academic training - and it was a job training!Previous Message I think that a marriage date might help us understand more about her role in the firm.
The IKG is quite strict with their regulations when it comes to search their archives and I'd prefer to escape the necessary paper works, but I'll see if I can find a way.
Previous Message I have never read anything about Oliver's (aka Otto) first wife and whether they were divorced or she died.
The Deutsch family website has a short paragraph about Alex and his mother: "Alex Beutler (born 25.2.1929, died 1996 in Berne, Switzerland), son of Otto and his first wife Erna Beutler (aka Oesterreicher-Schafranik), who remarried a Mr. Beutler in Berne. Her mother, Stefanie Schafranik also settled in Berne. Alex married Lydie Straume in September 1950. Lydie was born 18.11.1923 in Paris, a daughter of a Latvian father and a French mother. She now lives in Muri (near Berne, Switzerland). Alex and Lydie adopted two (twin) daughters, one has three sons, the other four daughters. Alex lived in his last years with Ildiko van Stuyvenberg."
Previous Message According to indexes of passenger lists Marianne and Oliver arrived in New York in 1940 via what appears to have a circuitous route as there are entries under both names of them having left the UK in 1940 for Rio de Janeiro.
Thank you! From most of the articles about Ostier Inc. I understood that both had arrived in New York already in 1938, coming more or less directly from Vienna, and had established their new company by 1939.
