Previous Message Is it possible for you to check the listed professions of his father and grandfather? Often, jewellery dealers would be listed as 'Kaufmann', merchant.
I've already checked the profession of Moriz Oesterreicher's father. Jakob Oesterreicher died at the age of 65 in 1892 and was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery. His last residence was Circusgasse 47, Wien 2, that's the address where Moriz was listed from 1895 on with an additional entry for his company, and where Moriz's mother Regine was listed after 1892 (women were listed either with their father or their husband, only widows had their own entry), so there's no possibility of confusion. The Deutsch/Oesterreicher family website is correct, Jakob was working for the Austrian-Hungarian railroads: He was a baggage porter ("Stationsdiener der Nordbahn"). This is the profession given in the records of the Central Cemetery and probably also on his gravestone. When his widow Regine died at the age of 86 in 1912, her profession was given accordingly as a "porter's widow" (Stationsdienerswitwe). Jakob was born in Hungary, so I don't have a possibility to check his father's profession, but I think we can safely exclude that he was a jewellery dealer and founder of a family business. Moriz Oesterreicher must have been a very talented businessman, considering these modest beginnings. Previous Message And would an initial arrest be documented, I wonder...
I don't know. They've located the files for the Oesterreicher company which I can examine from tomorrow on. I've no idea what to expect, but it might be documented there, if the business was left behind in the hands of the Nazi commissioners, should Moriz indeed have been arrested. Moriz made his declaration of property in July 1938, that would have been after the article you quoted was published. I ordered this file also, but that will take a while and I'm a bit reluctant to make use of it.
Previous Message Thank you so much again, this is amazing work.
Thanks, I wasn't sure if anyone but Beth was interested and thought about shifting the exchange to a private correspondence.(Edited to correct notation of names)
